If you’re wandering around Coolum this weekend, don’t be surprised if some of the faces in the crowd look familiar. The popular coastal strip attracts its fair share of famous visitors but this weekend it’s going celebrity crazy.
If you keep an eye out, you might see V8 motor racing stars Craig Lowndes and Jamie Whincup admiring local Commodores as they cruise the esplanade.
Or international surfers Mick Fanning and Julian Wilson checking out the popular Coolum break.
Two-time MotoGP World Champion Casey Stoner may even cruise by.
They’re just some of the celebrities expected to hit town for the final round of the MX Nationals.
While the racing action will be at the Coolum Motocross Track, the celebrities will be hanging around town once the action winds up.
And the local business community couldn’t be happier.
“It’s going to be a massive weekend – there’s a real vibe around the place already,” Coolum Business and Tourism Association president Noel Mooney said.
“It’s a huge weekend but because it’s the final round of the competition, a lot of the competitors and their teams don’t have anywhere to rush off to, so a lot of them will be hanging around for a holiday.
“Our restaurants and resorts and the caravan park will do really well.
“We lost the PGA, which was our biggest event, so it’s great to have the motocross.”
The extreme sports celebrities hitting town are all part of the Alpinestars VIP team, which is a long-term partner of the MX Nationals.
Also expected are former world motorcycle champion Mick Doohan, fellow rider Troy Bayliss and speedway star Jason Crump.
Mr Mooney said the presence of the celebrities was a bonus for Coolum.
“I’m sure a lot of people will be out and about trying to spot their favourite extreme sports star,” he said.
