Police want anyone with information on a man who displayed concerning behaviour toward a nine-year-old boy at Sunshine Beach to come forward.

Sunshine Coast District Child Protection Investigation Unit officer-in-charge Phil Hurst said the boy reported being approached by the man twice in the past three weeks while walking through an easement between Hill St and Swan Rd.

The first occasion was about 7.30am on August 15 and the second was about 11.40am on August 29.

The boy walked away both times.

“As a result there has been some concerning conversations and we’d like to speak to this person to make further investigations into exactly what the interaction was,” Detective Senior Sergeant Hurst said.

“We are asking for members of the public who know who this person is or in fact the person to come forward and assist police with these inquires.

He said the nature of the conversation relayed back to them raised concerns.

“We need to seek clarity about what the person’s intentions were and obviously the safety of children is paramount so we need to make these investigations to find out exactly what is going on.”

He wouldn’t go into detail about the nature of the conversation.

“But they were sufficient that the child was concerned and went back immediately and reported it to a parent and the parent was thoughtful enough to go and get some photos and provided those photos to police so we could follow up and make these investigations.”

Police have been patrolling the area in search of the person.

Det Snr Sgt Hurst said the two incidents with the same child were the only matters that had been reported to police.

Police were notified of the incidents earlier this week.

“This is a concerning incident but there was no physical interaction between the two people, there was no overt act that would indicate an abduction or anything of that nature so it’s just definitely some concerning behaviour.

“It does warrant police follow up… but there was nothing that would indicate there was any physical danger to that child.”

Anyone with information is urged to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

Police have appealed for public help to locate a man who approached a nine-year-old boy at Sunshine Beach recently.

The nineyear-old boy was not harmed during these incidents.

The man is described as Caucasian, tanned complexion, of slim build, 150-160cm tall, black/grey hair. In the first incident he was wearing a grey t-shirt and dark jeans.
