Two teenage prisoners have escaped from a correctional centre in the Gold Coast Hinterland, including the woman sentenced for joyriding in a rugby league star’s car.
Hayley Gillespie and Mary Brimble, both 19, this afternoon escaped from Numinbah Correctional Centre, a low-security open prison with an annex of 25 female prisoners.
Gillespie, who bought the stolen luxury car belonging to NRL star Darius Boyd for a small quantity of drugs, was sentenced to 18 months’ jail two weeks ago.
She pleaded guilty to 57 charges at Pine Rivers Magistrate Court on August 21, including unlawfully using three luxury cars, driving dangerously, evading police, stealing numberplates and defrauding shops during a five-month crime spree.
One of the cars was believed to be owned by the Brisbane Broncos fullback and his wife, an Audi with a market value of $78,000, although this could not be established, the court heard.
