Queensland police are questioning a man over a suspected road rage incident on the Gold Coast in which a woman was allegedly assaulted inside an upturned vehicle.
Police said the woman was trapped inside a car that had run down an embankment, hit a house awning and rolled onto its roof at Molendinar about 8:45am (AEST).
Local man Ted Harding and another neighbour went to help after hearing an “awful big bang”.
“We’ve run down through the gardens to see if we could render assistance or what was there, what’s happening,” he said.
“There’s a lady inside but she was upside down with her legs through the steering wheel.
“She was gasping – just – but she’s got blood all over her face.”
Mr Harding went to call police but said other people claim a man assaulted the woman while she was inside the upturned vehicle.
“He’s smashing the girl, this is what I hear, he’s smashing her in the face with a brick or something,” he said.
“So my next door neighbour has pulled him off and the other neighbour’s come across.”
Police said the man fled the scene after stealing a parked utility, but was arrested a short time later at Coomera.
